Lumpectomy Reconstruction
Lumpectomy Reconstruction
Patients who elect to undergo lumpectomies can be candidates for oncoplastic procedures. Using the principles of breast reduction and mastopexy, or breast lift, the breast tissue can be rearranged to create a more youthful appearance of the breast along with camouflaging the deficit created by the lumpectomy. A contralateral balancing procedure is often performed at that time to achieve symmetry.
-
Bilateral breast reduction with or without mastopexy can be performed at the time of lumpectomy. This will improve the aesthetics and symmetry of the breasts and at the same time remove cancer.
What are the benefits of breast reduction?
breasts and nipples are repositioned to the proper placement
decreased areola size and more symmetrical breasts
improved neck and back pain
ability to comfortably engage in more lifestyle activities
increased confidence and self-esteem in and out of clothing
What to expect before breast reduction surgery?
A consultation with one of our surgeons to discuss an individualized plan. Your physician will spend time examining you to determine the exact method necessary to optimize results and improve symptoms in the most natural way possible. Surgery is usually performed in an outpatient setting.
What to expect after breast reduction surgery?
In general, swelling and bruising may be present for 1-3 weeks. Most patients are able to return to work and light activity after 1 week. It will take the breasts 3-6 months to settle into their final position. However, improvement in symptoms will be recognized immediately.
-
Bilateral breast reduction with or without mastopexy can also be performed in a delayed manner when a lumpectomy left a significant defect, deformity or asymmetry. The good news is there are delayed options for restoration
-
In immediate or delayed cases, moving tissue within the breast can help create good contour and symmetry. Every case is unique for this procedure. Schedule a consultation with one of our surgeons to discuss your individual issues.
-
After lumpectomy, fat grafting can be performed to fill in a defect and create symmetry. Commonly used in the second stage of surgery, this procedure refines the contour of the breast for both autogenous and implant-based reconstruction. Using the meticulous technique, the fat is harvested through liposuction from the distant area and injected in a small amount into the restored breast, both to improve the contour and increase the volume.
